The First Autumn Tasks to Tackle in March
Peach Tree Leaf Curling
My nectarine and peach trees have recently begun to develop leaf curl. I have cut off some of the worst branches but new growth still has leaf curl. What should I do to prevent this?
Let lilies die back after flowering
Should I leave the stems of lilies uncut or tied after flowering (as we do with daffodil leaves) or cut them down? If we were to cut them down, how far from the ground? Would this apply to all lilies?

How To Grow Houseplants
Transfering Potted Camellia To The Garden
I have a beautiful camellia in my garden. Can I transfer this lovely plant to a pot? It is medium size and about 5-6 years old. Also, can you plant rhododendron in a pot?
Potted tomatoes, caterpillars
I have been growing potted tomatoes for three years, however every year I have a plague of green caterpillars that not only eat the leaves but burrow into the fruit before ripening. I have tried removing them one by one and also moving my pots to no avail. Is there something I can do to elevate these little critters and finally get a good yield of tomatoes, please?
Encourage butterflies into my garden
How can I encourage more native butterflies into my garden? And less white butterflies would be good too.
Leaves curling up on my Rose plant
Last year the leaves on all my rose plants started curling up. They are worse in the hardiest white roses. I have had the roses for years, pruned every year and they have done well every year past. What's wrong with them? I don't know what to do.
Aphids on my parsley
My parsley gets absolutely covered in bugs. Are they aphids and what is the best product to use on an edible crop to prevent or get rid of them please?
My cherry tomatoes have grown really well, but my money-makers are struggling to ripen and are larger than last season. Have I left too much fruit on the vine as they seem to be fighting for space?
Taking care of Houseplants
I’m a bit of a novice and need some help! I have a few houseplants that are looking like they are in desperate need of TLC. We are away most weekends and I lose track of under watering/over watering. PS: Is there somewhere you can drop plants in for rehab or someone who can help bring them back to life?
Tackling grey mould (botrytis) on strawberries
After months of waiting patiently for strawberries to grow and ripen, it can be frustrating to discover grey mould on your fruit. Strawberries can become affected with grey mould (botrytis) which thrives in humid, damp conditions or where air circulation is poor around plants.

Kumquat and Lime
I’ve had a Kumquat tree for about 5 years and have never had any fruit. I have a Kafir Lime as well which leaves are prolific, but should it have fruit too?
Growing Parsnips from Seed
Can you give us some advice on growing parsnips from seeds? We have been growing them for years without any problems but last year and this year the germination has been almost non-existent. They are new seeds (expiry date 2025), so that's not an issue... Any suggestions greatly appreciated...
Caring for Potted Lemon Trees
I am growing a lemon tree in a pot but it hasn’t been doing very well. Should I be fertilising more regularly? It is potted into compost. Is this ok or does it need potting mix?
Caring for Rhubarb
My rhubarb has not performed as well as it used to. I put homemade compost on it each year and the plant grows okay, but then some of the green leaves wilt or get reddish brown spots. Is it a natural process from the relentless sun or is it a disease?
Planting Citrus Trees in Pots
I recently bought three citrus trees; Orange Harwood Dwarf (grows 1.5 meters high), Lime Bearss Dwarf (grows 1.5 metres high) and Tangelo Seminole (grows 2.5 metres high).
I’d like to have them in pots which can be moved in the cold winter months. How big a pot should I use and what compost/ pot mix would be best?
My garden has a hedge of olive trees. Last year I harvested some of the olive fruits, but they were very small. What can I do to make the olive fruit fleshier?
Brown Rot on Peaches
I wonder if you could tell me what is wrong with our peaches please. Also is there anything we can do naturally to help them?
Watering and mulching
If I add mulch to my garden, should I assist it and dig it in as it rots down or leave it alone to mix in on its own? For e.g Pea straw.
How do I decide which plants or trees would prefer bark or something like Mulch & Grow? For example, a lemon tree or roses in the garden and tomato or cucumber plants in pots.
Planting A Peach Tree
I want to plant a Blackboy peach tree in the middle of a section of grass. Do I need to dig out some of the soil and replace it. How big should the hole be compared to the rootball?
Feeding Your Olive Tree
Could you please advise me of the best fertiliser you would recommend for olive trees in the home garden, particularly to stimulate the production of fruit?
We want to shift our strawberries for next year and wonder what tips you may have as they are taking up valuable space in our glasshouse. Can we transplant strawberries easily?
Limitations of Tomatoes in Pots
I have tomatoes in pots and want to plant them out in the garden. They have a ‘creep’ on the leaves. I’ve added fertiliser and regularly watered. Soapy water works temporarily, but needs constant application - can you help?
