Feeding and Pruning Guava Trees
I have a Guava plant that is dormant over winter. I’ve had two small crops off this plant. What do I feed it for better growth? Do you prune guava plants?
Yes, guavas benefit from both regular feeding and annual pruning. They have fairly high nutrient needs, and a bit of structure each year helps keep the plant productive and easy to harvest.
For stronger growth and better fruiting, apply Daltons Citrus & Fruit Fert as a side dressing every 4–6 weeks through the main growing season:
- Start in late October as the plant comes back into growth, and feed through to early December.
- Recommence in mid-February and continue through to mid-April.
- Spread fertiliser out to the drip line (directly under the outer edge of the branches rather than right at the trunk) and water in well after applying.
- You can also apply Daltons Big Value Blood & Bone over the same feeding period - guavas respond well to it.
Water also matters. For steady growth and reliable fruit set, give your guava regular watering during the drier months, especially while it’s flowering and forming fruit.
Guavas should be pruned once a year in early to mid-April, after fruiting has finished. Pruning helps stop the plant becoming an oversized tree and keeps harvesting simple. A good size to aim for is roughly 2–2.5 m high and about 1.5 m wide. Annual pruning also opens the plant up, improving light penetration, which helps fruit ripen more evenly.
