Alstroemeria Dying Back Before Flowering
I have had several different coloured dwarf Alstroemeria which I have tried to grow in pots. These always seem to die right back just as they are about to flower.
Alstroemeria are generally quite easy to grow and can produce masses of flowers for both the garden and indoor display, but they do not always perform well if the growing conditions are not quite right.
Check drainage and growing conditions
Alstroemeria are not especially fussy, but they are certainly more successful in a fertile, well-drained soil or potting mix that has been improved with compost and/or planting mix. They prefer a full sun position, although they can also do well in dappled light.
When and how to refresh plants
Because your plants are repeatedly dying back before flowering, it can help to cut back the green growth, divide the plants and replant them into fresh, well-prepared soil. The best time to do this is late autumn or early spring, when the plants are not actively flowering.
After replanting, monitor their growth. If they have not shown strong new shoots within two to three weeks, it may be best to remove them and replace them with new plants.
