Do Freesia Bulbs Need Lifting Each Year?
Do I need to pull my freesia bulbs and replant them, or can I just leave them to re-flower next season?
In most gardens, freesia bulbs do not need to be lifted each year. They can be left in the ground to naturalise (spread naturally on their own), and will usually flower again the following season.
The most important thing is to leave the foliage (leaves) in place after flowering. Allow the green leaves to slowly turn yellow and brown before removing them. While the leaves are still green, they are absorbing sunlight and nutrients that recharge the bulb and help produce next season’s flowers.
Freesias often perform well when left undisturbed and can naturalise in the garden for many years. Only when flowering starts to decline should the bulbs be lifted, divided and replanted to refresh the clump.
To support strong flowering each season:
- When new foliage begins to emerge, apply a side dressing of Daltons Premium Bulb Fertiliser to encourage healthy growth and good flower development.
- Feed again after flowering so the bulbs can build up their energy reserves ready for the following year.
- With minimal disturbance and feeding at the right times, freesias will continue to return each year with reliable spring colour.
