Edible Plants to Grow in Pots on a Deck

Can you suggest what edible plants would be suitable to grow in pots on my north facing deck and the correct soil mix.

When growing plants in pots it’s important to use the correct growing medium. Daltons Premium Potting Mix is specially formulated to hold moisture while still allowing good drainage, and it also provides balanced nutrients to support healthy plant growth.

Herbs and vegetables for containers

  • A north-facing deck receives plenty of sun, which is ideal for growing herbs. Most herbs do very well in containers, including basil, parsley, thyme, rosemary and chives.
  • If the container is large enough, you can also grow a range of vegetables such as dwarf beans, dwarf tomatoes, spinach, kale, beetroot and radishes.
  • While our Premium Potting Mix includes essential plant fertilisers for up to ten months, supplementary applications of Daltons Goldcote Vegetable and Herb are also beneficial for your vegetable container plants. Remember to renew the planting mix each growing season or refresh your existing mix with fertiliser.

Fruit suitable for large containers

Some fruit plants can also grow well in larger pots. Blueberries, lemons, limes and red guavas are all suitable options for container growing.

Watering container plants

Plants grown in pots dry out much faster than those in the ground, so they need consistent watering. Water deeply every couple of days rather than giving them a light sprinkle each evening. Increase watering during hot summer weather.

If you are away for a few days, ask a neighbour to water your pots or move them into a spot with dappled shade so they don’t dry out too quickly.
