Controlling & Preventing Moss In Your Lawn
My large lawn is now suffering from moss infestation. It started from the damp-shaded part of the lawn and has slowly spread to the rest. What remedy will control or eradicate the moss?
Moss infestation in lawns is common, especially during winter. It often begins in damp, shaded areas and gradually spreads. Moss thrives where grass struggles, particularly in areas with excess moisture, poor drainage, and limited sunlight. Tips for reducing moss in your lawn:
- Improve Drainage and Sunlight -Enhancing drainage and increasing sunlight exposure will help grass compete with moss. Aerate compacted soil to improve water movement and, where possible, thin out large trees or remove unnecessary shading structures.
- Apply Iron Sulphate - Treat moss-affected areas with Iron Sulphate and water it in. This is a common and effective moss treatment that also deepens the colour of your lawn.
- Strengthen Lawn Growth - A well-fed, healthy lawn is more resistant to moss. Apply Daltons Premium Lawn Fertiliser regularly to encourage strong grass growth. Fertilise every 4-5 weeks from October until Christmas (avoiding peak summer), and again from late February to late April.
As summer brings drier conditions and increased sunlight, moss will naturally decline. Proactive lawn care helps speed up this process and prevents future infestations.
