Child-Safe Pest Control for Vegetable Gardens

Child-Safe Pest Control for Vegetable Gardens

At our childcare centre we grow our own vegetables in large garden planter boxes. How can we protect plants from insects without using pesticides?

Growing vegetables in planter boxes at a childcare centre is a great way to teach children about gardening and healthy eating. Keeping plants pest-free without pesticides requires regular monitoring and simple, natural pest control methods.

Engaging Children in Pest Management
Encourage children to inspect plants regularly, focusing on the undersides of leaves on broccoli, lettuce, silverbeet, and spinach. They can help remove green caterpillars, slugs, and snails by hand.

Natural Slug and Snail Control

  • Beer Traps – Dig small holes in the soil and place a saucer or jar so the rim is level with the ground. Fill with ½ cup of beer—slugs and snails are attracted to the liquid and will fall in.
  • Barrier Protection – Create a protective ring of crushed bark or shells around plants to deter slugs and snails.

Aphid Control Without Chemicals
During summer, wash aphids off plants by spraying them 2-3 times a day for 3 days with water. This helps prevent infestations without using pesticides.

Strengthen Plants for Natural Resistance
Healthy plants are more resistant to pests. Apply Daltons Premium Vegetable Fertiliser to enrich the soil and support strong growth.

Using these child-safe pest control methods ensures a thriving, chemical-free vegetable garden while keeping gardening fun and educational.
