Taking care of Houseplants

I’m a bit of a novice and need some help! I have a few houseplants that are looking like they are in desperate need of TLC. We are away most weekends and I lose track of under watering/over watering. PS: Is there somewhere you can drop plants in for rehab or someone who can help bring them back to life?

Houseplants are not the easiest plants to successfully care for and do require a little TLC.  Problems are invariably related to watering – lack of or too much.

If possible, maintain a record of how often and how much you water your houseplants - perhaps use a small whiteboard or calendar. A small hand mister is also very cheap to buy and is valuable in maintaining the health of your houseplants. Plants can be misted once or twice a day - read our houseplant guide (see below) on why this is important.

In terms of houseplant rehab, we are not aware of any places that offer that service – although it is a good idea! Bathrooms often have high humidity thanks to showers/baths etc, so they are an excellent environment to rehabilitate houseplants that are looking poorly or struggling.

Thanks to the popularity of houseplants, you can now purchase watering indicators or soil moisture sensors which can help take the guesswork out of when to water your plant. Check with your local garden centre or look online for products.
