Leaving Succulents Outdoors in Winter
Can I leave my succulents outside in winter?
Succulents that have been growing outdoors can usually stay outside over winter, just make sure they’re not sitting in soggy soil. While many succulents cope well with the cold, it’s excess moisture that causes the most trouble. Wet roots and cooler temperatures are a bad combo and can quickly lead to rot.
To keep them happy, ensure your plants are in a free-draining mix like our Daltons Premium Cacti & Succulent Mix, check that pots have clear drainage holes, and tip out or remove any excess water after heavy rain. If your area gets a lot of winter wet, consider moving your succulents if growing in containers, under cover or up against the house where they’ll stay drier.
If you're planning to move succulents or cacti from indoors to outside, take it slowly. Start by placing them in a sheltered outdoor spot like under the eaves to help them adjust, then gradually move them into more exposed conditions once they’ve acclimatised.
