Growing from Cuttings

I enjoy growing my own plants from cuttings. At present I have only used Hydrangeas and Rosemary. Can you give me some other variates that I can try?

You would be surprised just how many plants you can propagate from cuttings. A little experimentation can produce some exciting results. What is important is the state of the wood when you take the cuttings.

Preferably what is termed semi-hardwood (growth that is firm but not hard), produces the most successful cuttings. Wait for warmer weather before taking your next batch of cuttings. Dipping fresh cuttings in rooting hormone can improve the rate of success.  Pumice sand like Daltons Cutting Mix is the preferable growing medium to place your cuttings.

You can start with some easy natives to propagate including Hebes, Coprosma, Corokias, Macropipers, Melicopes, Grisilinias. You can also try exotics like Lavenders, Santolinas, Teucriums, Geraniums, Pelargoniums, Fuchsias, Plumbagos, Buddlias and Westringias. Always date your cuttings as this will provide a guide for future ones you wish to take.
