Keeping Weeds Out Of The Veggie Patch
How do I keep weeds out of my vegetable garden
Weeds are invariably found in almost all gardens, but there are measures that can be taken to minimise weed growth.
- Thorough preparation prior to planting: Involves not only creating a fine tilth into which young vegetables can be planted but also the removal of all existing weeds and, in some cases, weed bulbs, e.g., oxalis.
- Using a push hoe or Dutch hoe to chop up young, emerging weed seedlings is also an excellent way to aerate the soil.
- Application of mulch, such as Daltons Premium Mulch & Feed, when applied thickly (5-10cm), makes it more difficult for weed seeds to reach the soil and germinate. Mulch needs to be reapplied several times during the growing season.
- Grow vegetables with a dense, prostrate habit that smothers the ground, not allowing space for weeds to grow. Possible plants include cucumbers, courgettes and strawberries.
