Lawn Patching
About 18-months ago we had a new lawn installed with rolls of ready turf. Since then, almost half of the lawn is covered in brown patches of dead grass (most of these are from dog urine). Lots of weeds are coming through as well and we have been digging these out as they appear. We keep the lawn well-watered and have tried sowing new lawn seed, lawn soil and lawn fertiliser but have had no success. Do you have any recommendations?
The success or failure of ready turf lies largely in the preparation of the site before the laying of the rolls, and in the immediate aftercare. For instance, the existing soil should be levelled, and additional topsoil and/or sand added to create a suitable base for the ready turf. After laying the turf it is critical that the new lawn is kept moist to ensure grassroots become well established.
We would recommend contacting whoever installed your ready turf, as it is more than likely that the preparation may have been inadequate. Unfortunately, it may be necessary to begin the process again or to develop a more traditional lawn by spreading new topsoil and sowing lawn seed.
