When to fertilise garlic

How often do I fertilise garlic? My bulbs were so tiny last year.

There are a few key factors to growing good garlic, including fertiliser. It starts with choosing a sunny, free-draining site, good soil preparation, and selecting and planting the best cloves.

Site, soil & clove selection:

  • Choose a spot that gets at least six hours of sunlight a day.
  • Ensure the soil is free draining (water drains away easily after rain or watering) and enrich it with Daltons Compost before planting. This also helps improve soil structure and drainage, especially you have heavy or clay-based soil.
  • Always select and plant the biggest, healthiest outer cloves from your bulb - larger cloves usually grow into larger bulbs.
  • When planting, add a handful of Daltons Premium Bulb Mix into each planting hole to give cloves a strong start.
  • Don't plant cloves too deeply, approximately 20–40 mm deep with the pointy end facing up will do.

Once your garlic is planted:

  • Fertilise your plants every few weeks from early spring with Daltons Premium Bulb Fertiliser.
  • Stop feeding in early summer when leaves begin to yellow and brown - that’s the sign harvest time is near.
  • Water consistently through the growing season, avoiding both overwatering and drying out, especially when plants are young.
