Feeding a Young Lemon Tree Before It Fruits
Do I feed my lemon tree in its first year, or do I start when it bears fruit?
Yes, start feeding your lemon tree from planting time rather than waiting for it to fruit. Citrus are known as heavy-feeders so need regular fertilising to keep them in the best health.
Why early feeding matters
The first few years are important for helping a lemon tree establish strong roots and healthy growth. Regular feeding supports the young tree while it is settling in and helps prepare it for future fruiting.
What to use and when to feed
- When planting add Daltons Premium Fruit & Citrus Fertiliser or Daltons Goldcote Fruit and Citrus Tree Fertiliser to your planting hole.
- Then apply fertiliser from early spring, feed every six weeks until mid-December. Start again in March and continue through to late April.
- Always water well after feeding and follow the application rates on the pack, especially with young trees.
- A layer of Daltons Premium Mulch & Feed around the base can also help protect the roots and retain soil moisture. Keep mulch clear of the trunk to avoid collar rot.
