Avocado Growing Struggles

Why is it so hard to grow avocados?

In optimal conditions, avocados thrive and growing vigorously. However, they struggle in heavy clay soils, very windy sites, or areas prone to heavy frosts. To ensure their success, it’s essential to plant them in well-draining soil, in a sheltered position protected from strong prevailing winds, and frost-free conditions. These ideal locations are typically found in Gisborne, Bay of Plenty, and Northland, the primary avocado-growing regions in New Zealand.

It's important to choose a grafted, named variety such as Hass, which is known for their reliable fruit production. Avoid planting seedling avocados, as they often grow into large trees but fail to bear fruit.
