When to Prune Passionfruit Vines

How and when do you prune a passionfruit vine that has just finished fruiting?

Passionfruit is an incredibly vigorous vine, making annual pruning essential to keep it under control. When you prune, remember that passionfruit produces its fruit on the current season's growth.

The ideal time to prune is at the end of winter or early spring, just before new growth starts to appear on the vine. Be sure to remove any excess or overlapping growth and clear away any dead wood. Secure the strongest, most vigorous growth to a wall or wires, and trim all the side shoots by at least half their length. Don’t worry—passionfruit vines are quite resilient, and it’s almost impossible to prune them too hard!

Passionfruit plants typically have a lifespan of 4-5 years, so it’s wise to plant new specimens every 2-3 years to maintain a continuous fruit supply. They thrive best in soil that drains well, enriched with fresh compost to keep them happy and healthy. Passionfruit loves either full sun or dappled light, but it’s important to protect the vines from strong prevailing winds, as the new growth can be quite delicate.
