When is the best time to prune hydrangeas?

As a general rule, it’s best to prune your hydrangeas as late as possible. You must wait until all the leaves have dropped and there is no sign of new growth. 

The time of the year will vary depending on the weather and what part of New Zealand you are in. If you prune too early and there is a warm spell, the hydrangea will very quickly break into new growth, as if it is spring! 

Note, when pruning hydrangeas always remove some of the older wood and of course any dead wood. Some hydrangeas produce masses of growth over summer so these need to be thinned at pruning season also.
