I've read conflicting advice about pruning citrus to avoid borer - when is the best time to prune them if they require it?

Strangely, pruning citrus trees can sometimes lead to problems with citrus borer. Any broken branches, rough pruning cuts or damaged areas can provide an entry point for citrus borer larvae.

In general, citrus trees do not need much pruning. Pruning too heavily can also affect the following fruiting season, as the tree often puts its energy into leafy, vegetative growth rather than fruit production.

Only prune citrus trees where there is clear physical evidence of borer. If you can see borer damage, remove that affected section of the tree completely. Make clean cuts and avoid leaving broken or damaged wood behind, as this can make the tree more vulnerable.

For healthy citrus trees, it is best to keep pruning light and only remove dead, damaged or diseased growth when needed.
