Rust on Broad Beans

Last year my broad beans had rust. This year they are looking good, but are only three or four inches high. Please tell me how to prevent them getting rust again.

Rust is a very common disease regularly affecting broad beans and often appears when they are planted too close together in a very sheltered garden with limited air movement.

By planting in a more open site, with plants well-spaced apart, it is possible to reduce the potential for infection. Otherwise, spraying at 2-3 weekly intervals with copper oxychloride will help prevent outbreaks of rust.
