Growing Tomatoes Vertically with String
Can you grow tomatoes vertically up a string? How do you do this?
Yes, you can grow tomatoes vertically up a string by following a few guidelines. Here’s how:
Plant choice and site selection
- Opt for a vining tomato variety, as they will readily climb upwards, unlike dwarf varieties. Read our Tomatoes guide for what to choose.
- With grafted vine tomato varieties, you may need additional string to accommodate their growth.
- Choose a sheltered site that protects your plants from wind damage.
String choice and structure
- It’s important to use very strong, durable string that will last the entire growing season. It has to support the weight of the mature tomato plant with ripe tomatoes – they can be surprisingly heavy!
- The string should be around 2 meters long to maximise the potential growth of the plant.
- Make sure the string is firmly attached to a fence, wall, shed, or another solid structure.
Securing your plant
- Start tying up your plants as soon as they are tall enough to benefit from support, usually around 30 cm.
- Twist and tie up growing leaders to the string using a loose figure-eight around the stem and the string. This allows for growth without constricting the stem.
- If securing with ties, make sure they are not too tight, as this can damage the stem and restrict growth. They should be snug but not restrictive.
- As the plant continues to grow, gently tie up the leaders to the string. This helps keep the plant upright and promotes good airflow around the foliage.
By following these guidelines, you can successfully grow your tomatoes vertically and enjoy a delicious harvest!
