Growing Parsnips from Seed

Can you give us some advice on growing parsnips from seeds? We have been growing them for years without any problems but last year and this year the germination has been almost non-existent.

There are a number of possible reasons why your parsnip seed is not germinating.

Firstly, perhaps contact the seed company that supplied the seed to check if other customers have experienced similar problems.

As with all vegetable seeds, fresh seeds should be purchased every year. Parsnip seed is always slow to germinate and soaking the seed overnight before sowing can improve germination.

Mulching the rows where the seed has been sown with Daltons Premium Mulch & Feed, helps the soil remain cold and moist during the long germination process when seeds are in danger of drying out.

Finally, try growing parsnips in different parts of the vegetable garden as crop rotation is very important. You might like to read our free How to Grow Winter Vegetables Guide for more helpful advice.
