We have a fairly large bank I would love to fill with easy-care flowers and foliage. Preferably ones I can use as cut flowers in vases and arrangements as I’m a florist. Any advice on what will grow well in our area?
We have put together a list of plants suitable for your bank with a mixture of flowers, foliage, and berries. What you are planting into is very important, so for best results prepare your soil a week or two before you plant out.
Start by removing any dead or old plants and weeds. Then evenly apply a generous layer of Daltons Enriched Compost (approximately 40L per 2m2) and thoroughly work it into the soil about 1 ½ spade deep. This ensures that the soil has been fully aerated, and the compost has been mixed thoroughly with the existing soil, improving the organic matter, nutrient content, and microbial activity. You can also add in some Daltons Premium Rose & Flower Fertiliser.
Suggested plants to grow on your bank include:
• Azalea Illam Hybrids – many colours to choose from
• Callander portoricensis
• Callicarpa dichotoma
• Erica’s – many different forms to choose from
• Hydrangea paniculate
• Nandina domestica ‘Richmond’
• Philadelphus – low growing forms
• Pyracantha ‘Brilliant’
• Viburnum ‘Davidii’

ToeToe bushes need some extra care
I have some Toetoe bushes that need refurbishing. What is the best way to do this as they have been in about 30 years and are all dried at the base? Do I need new plants, or can I fix up the ones I have?
I have been inspired by the amazing show of Dahlias at the Christchurch Botanic Gardens to grow them for the first time. When is the perfect time to plant tubers and what soil preparation do you recommend?

I look after my daughter’s lawn/garden, and I cannot control the growing of "thatch" in the lawn. I purchased a special rake for this but other than a good work out, it only helps a little. Am I not watering enough, or too much? Should I be spraying it with something in particular?

Growing fruit trees in pots
I rent, so all of my garden is in pots and containers in case I have to move. Are there any fruit trees that I can grow in pots? I would love to grow plums, apricots, apples, nectarines, feijoa (I better stop there). Are there any places selling fruit trees that I should be talking to?
