When to Plant Garlic in New Zealand

When is the best time to sow garlic in the South Island and the rest of New Zealand?

Late autumn to mid-winter is the best time to plant garlic in the South Island - and across the rest of New Zealand too. Choose a sunny spot with free-draining soil and add fresh compost to enrich the existing soil before planting. Place the cloves, pointy end up, 5cm below the ground, and space them 10–15cm apart.

Garlic is usually ready to harvest in mid-summer, once the tops begin to dry off and turn brown. Read our How to Grow Garlic Guide for more help on planting, caring and harvesting garlic.
