Growing Artichokes and Kohlrabi in Your Garden
How do I grow artichokes and kohlrabi?
Kohlrabi is a cool-season crop from the brassica family, so it’s best grown during the winter months. Choose a well-drained, full sun location, and enrich the existing soil with Dalton Garden Time Compost - mix well before planting. You can sow seed directly into the garden or raise seedlings in trays with Daltons Premium Seed Raising Mix and transplant them once established.
Like other brassicas, slugs and snails can be an issue, so keep them under control. Kohlrabi takes around 12 weeks to mature and is ready to harvest when the swollen stem is about the size of a tennis ball.
Artichokes need a bit of space to thrive - plant them up to one metre apart in well-drained soil that has been enriched with compost. Plant seedlings in early spring and expect your first harvest in 80 to 100 days, when the “centre bud” can be picked. Later in the growing season smaller side buds can be harvested.
Artichokes are perennials, so with the right care - including regular watering during dry periods and slug and snail control - they’ll keep producing for up to six years.
