Dealing with weeds before planting bulbs
We have just bought our first house and are landscaping the garden. We would like to plant some bulbs, but we need to rid ourselves of these weeds. They just keep coming back! Could you please tell us what they are and how we best get rid of them once and for all! We want to plant something much prettier there.
The plant in the photo you sent in is Acanthus mollis, commonly known as Bear's breeches. It is often grown for its ornamental foliage; however, it can certainly be a persistent nuisance in a garden and is difficult to remove once established. It requires very careful and methodical digging to remove the plant completely including all its roots. Failing this, the plant will reappear very quickly because root fragments grow easily.
Fortunately, it does not seed profusely, so by slowly clearing these areas of your garden, they should remain free of Acanthus plants and allow you to plant your bulbs. Remember to prepare your soil well before planting, try our Daltons Premium Bulb Mix.
