Can I direct sow vegetable seeds into compost?

Achieving high germination rates starts with sowing seeds into a specially formulated seed raising mix. While some vegetable seeds may germinate in high-quality compost, modern seed-raising mixes provide the best conditions not just for germination, but also for the growth of delicate young seedlings.

Seedling death is often caused by poor drainage. Compost retains water, whereas seed-raising mix is designed to be highly-free draining which is vital for healthy seedling development. 

For the best results, opt for a fresh, good-quality seed mix like Daltons Premium Seed Mix. Compost is more beneficial for enriching soil, planting new trees and shrubs, or mulching around existing plants.
