Do Wildflowers Come Back Every Year?

Can you please tell me if wildflower seeds come up each year?

Whether wildflowers come back each year depends on the types included in the seed mix.

  • Annuals grow, flower, set seed and finish within one growing season.
  • Perennials live for more than one growing season and can come back year after year.

Many wildflower seed mixes contain a blend of both annuals and perennials, although some are mostly perennial.

How wildflowers return

Perennial wildflowers can regrow each year from the same plant. Once flowering has finished and seed begins to develop, you can also collect the seed and store it in a dry place over winter before sowing again in spring.

Alternatively, you can let nature take its course and allow the plants to drop their seed around the garden. Some of these seeds will stay dormant over winter and may germinate when conditions warm up again in spring.

If you start with a good-quality wildflower mix, you should see flowers appearing each year, either from perennial plants returning or from new seedlings that have self-seeded.
