Land of the Long White Cloud
I want to grow my rose, Land of the Long White Cloud, in a large pot. Do I have to do anything extra special to help it survive in the container? Also, where is the best area in the garden to put my rose over the winter months?
To ensure the success of your rose, the container must be large enough to allow for future root growth. Not just the width of the container but also depth, as roses send down deep roots.
Ideally, plant the rose in winter when the plants are dormant. Fill the pot with new Garden Time Potting Mix and gently remove the rose from the pot. Place it in the container and backfill with the mix, firming the soil as you go. Finally, water the plant well.
Place the rose in a full-sun site and water regularly over the summer months. This is very important as potted plants will dry out quickly in with drying summer winds and reduced rainfall.
Apply a side a dressing of Daltons Premium Rose and Flower Fertiliser every 4-6 weeks over summer which will promote healthy green leaves and beautiful blooms. Spread the fertiliser evenly around the top of the container, avoiding direct contact with the leaves or stem, and water it in well.
After pruning in winter, place the pot in a sheltered spot where it will receive adequate rainfall. Don’t put the pot in a shed or under an alcove as it may dry out.
