Flower & Rose Beds

Inspired by the Netflix documentary Kiss the Ground, we would like to regenerate our soil. What mulch did you recommend for our flower and rose beds? We have a clay soil that has been treated with gypsum to improve aeration, but the soil is lacking in rich nutrients. Also, I recently read that bark depletes the soil of nutrients as it breaks down, is this true?

To regenerate your soil, you need to incorporate copious amounts of compost into the existing soil as this improves drainage and aeration. Ensure drainage in your garden is adequate for the wet winter months, and remember large amounts of gypsum are required to significantly improve clay soils.

Some loss of nutrients can occur if you mulch with certain products such as wood chips. This only temporarily depletes the soil of nutrients as it breaks down however, and by adding blood and bone to the soil this concern can be removed.

The mulch we recommend for your flower and rose beds is our most popular mulch product, Daltons Mulch and Grow. It has added nutrients, chicken and sheep pellets and wetting agent. As mulch breaks down over time, these valuable nutrients are added to the soil. It improves the soil quality and structure by stimulating an increase in worm activity and natural soil microbes which are essential in developing strong, healthy plant root systems.
