Fertilising Raspberries & Pruning Nashi

When should I fertilise my raspberries plants and prune my nashi pear tree?

Raspberries should be fertilised just as they commence new growth in spring. Apply Daltons Garden Time Berry Fertiliser in early October and every 4-6 weeks until Christmas, recommencing late February to mid-April. But be very careful not over fertilise as you will produce more vegetative growth at the expense of your fruit!

When growing raspberries, ensure that the soil is well-drained and that at the end of the growing season, the older canes are removed and selected young canes are tied up to stakes or a frame.

Nashis are vigorous growing trees and therefore require annual winter pruning to restrict the ultimate height of the tree and to produce ample " fruiting wood". Nashis are "spur bearing” fruit which means the bulk of the fruit is produced on spurs that develop on the main branches. As Nashis grow, they produce many branches that need to be removed to allow for air movement through the tree and to enable light to reach ripening fruit. To do this, remove all inward growing branches, and space main branches to create a balanced tree. Reducing the height to a manageable 2.5 to 3 meters will make harvesting in summer considerably easier.
