Cherry Blossom

We have a very big cherry blossom tree on our property and it has nearly dropped all its leaves for winter. When is it best to trim/prune it?

Deciduous trees are traditionally pruned in mid-winter after all the leaves have dropped. If your tree is very old and has not been pruned regularly over the years, we would suggest pruning in mid-winter to remove overlapping, inward growing and very crowded branches. Then, complete the pruning process after flowering has finished and before the leaves start growing in spring.

Light pruning during the growing season can also be carried out to remove unwanted branches or any sucker growth on the root stock.
